Who and what is Chapel-en-le-Frith Ladies Choir?

We are an all female choir of about 60 voices, in 3 sections - Soprano 1, Soprano 2 and Alto. We perform a varied programme: works by John Rutter and Howard Goodall, songs from the shows and favourites from the pop, jazz and world music repertoires. We perform 4 or 5 concerts a year and we also take part in other events such as carol singing and special celebrations.

Chapel-en-le-Frith Ladies Choir

Choir members are of varied ages and walks of life. We come from Chapel-en-le-Frith and surrounding area - as far away as Macclesfield and also from Buxton and from villages all around. We are a friendly group and if you are new to the area, joining us is a good way of making friends, although at the moment we are at full capacity and have a waiting list. We have a social committee who arrange a variety of activities.

You can also join us as a 'Friend'. For more details, see the Support us page.

Musical Director

Our Musical Director is Dorian Kelly. Educated at Reading Grammar School, Dorian went on to study trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music Junior Department (part-time), followed by Trinity College of Music (full-time). After leaving college he worked as an instrumental music teacher and a freelance trumpet player (with performance credits including Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond, Jamie Cullum, The Temptations and The Drifters).

In 2005 Dorian relocated from Berkshire to Yorkshire and switched his attention to composition. Since then he has composed and recorded the music for over 30 short films, animations and documentaries and has had 200+ media music tracks published, resulting in usage in the UK, USA, Canada, Norway, Portugal, Czech Republic, Finland, New Zealand & Singapore, including Sky 1, Sky 2, Discovery Channel, Lion TV, Living TV and Radio (including BBC 2 & BBC 1Xtra).

In 2010 Dorian returned to studying and completed an ALCM (Composition) in 2011, followed by an LLCM (Composition) in 2012, as an external student with the London College of Music. During this time Dorian composed numerous choral works (SATB, SSA & TTBB), ensemble arrangements and several music-based educational resources, which are published on his own web site www.modalmusic.biz

He is currently the musical director of Chapel-en-le-Frith Ladies Choir, Saddleworth Male Voice Choir and the Halifax Cube Choir. He also works as an examiner for Edexcel (Music Technology) and Trinity College London (Rock & Pop syllabus), as well as a brass teacher for Hope Bank Works and Bradford Music Service (including working with groups of hearing impaired children).

Accompanist

Our Accompanist is Jane Simmons. Alongside nearly 40 years of private teaching, Jane taught keyboard, clarinet and piano at Chapel Primary School for ten years.

She then moved on to Chapel High School to teach music to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 children.

While at the High School, Jane also took part and was heavily involved in the organisation of concerts and musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease and Annie.

Jane joined Chapel Ladies Choir in 2006 and plays at all our rehearsals and concerts.

President

Our President is Hilary Batterbee

Hilary has been a lifelong resident in Chapel-en-le-Frith parish and President of the Ladies Choir for 4 years. Now retired from her working life as a Chartered Surveyor she is a member of Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council and associated with a number of local charities.

Serving as a magistrate, working mainly in Buxton, for almost 30 years is still a time consuming occupation. She enjoys gardening and country life and if granted one wish it would be to have a magnificent singing voice. In the meantime pretending whilst listening to the choir has to be sufficient
for someone who enjoys music but cannot sing!
